Just about every gambler knows the name of Doyle Brunson, famous poker player, poker author and tournament champion. Named "#1 most influential force in the world of poker" by Bluff Magazine in 2006, Doyle is the winner of 10 World Series of Poker bracelets in his long career and two time winner of the WSOP Main Event. He was the first poker player to win over a million dollars in poker tournaments and has been playing poker professionally for over 50 years years. Born in 1933 in the small Texas town of Longworth, Doyle was an outstanding all-state basketball player and track star in his youth and was headed for a career in pro basketball, when a summer job injury ended his athletic ambitions. Doyle had been familiar with the game of poker and after his injury, he started playing the game more seriously to pay for his expenses. He achieved a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a master’s the following year. After graduating Doyle entered the business world, but on his first day in his new job, he earned a month’s salary in a few hours playing poker. He soon embarked on a full time career as a professional poker player and never looked back.

Over the course of his career, Doyle has has the pleasure of playing poker with many of the poker world’s most famous and colorful players, including names like Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. Before there was such a thing as the WSOP or professional poker tournaments, poker was certainly a quasi-legal game. In the early years in places like Fort Worth, Texas, the rules were not very strictly enforced. Many games were run by some rather shady characters. Doyle certainly had his share of unusual and interesting experiences while traveling the underground poker circuit.

Joining forces with some of his poker playing buddies, Doyle and his group traveled from place to place gambling on a wide variety of events including poker, golf and a whole slew of "prop" betting events. The group put their money together and headed for Las Vegas where they quickly managed the lose a six figure amount. Although they remained friends, Doyle’s band of merry gamblers broke up and eventually Doyle settled in Las Vegas and as they say, the rest is history.

Doyle is still very active in poker tournaments. He won 1.1 million dollars in the Legends of Poker World Poker Tour event in 2004 and his 10th WSOP braclet in 2005; one behind Phil Helmuth’s total of 11 WSOP bracelets.
